Vector vVIRTUALtarget by Vector Informatik GmbH is a software-in-the-loop virtual target environment that lets you execute ECU software on a standard PC without relying on physical control units. By virtualizing the target microcontroller and key peripherals, it enables early, repeatable development, integration, and verification of embedded automotive software—often with little or no change to the production code.

Key capabilities:

• Runs ECU applications in a virtual target context to validate functionality, integration, and timing behavior before hardware is available.
• Integrates with Vector toolchains for bus/network simulation, test automation, and measurement/calibration (for example, via XCP).
• Supports AUTOSAR Classic and non-AUTOSAR software architectures, enabling virtual ECUs to interact with virtual vehicle networks (e.g., CAN, LIN, FlexRay, Ethernet).
• Connects to plant and environment models to perform closed-loop system testing.
• Provides interfaces for debugging, tracing, fault injection, and performance analysis, and supports automation for continuous integration and regression testing.

Typical use cases include rapid bring-up of ECU stacks, virtual integration with the rest of the vehicle network, automated nightly test runs, and preparation for HIL by de-risking functions early. The result is faster iteration cycles, lower test costs, and higher test coverage long before prototype hardware is ready.
